- Dark Army thugs break into Elliot's apartment, guns drawn, followed by Grant. The discover the Mr Robot jacket in the closet. They continue to search, because they must find out where he has gone. Once they leave, Elliot observes their departure from Shayla's old apartment next door.
- He and Flipper reenter the apartment. He realizes that since he is targeted, Darlene must be targeted next. He hopes to meet at their rendezvous.
- Agent Dom tries to hand files to the agent in charge of Darlene's arrest, but he doesn't know anything about it; he's flying to San Francisco. She fins Santiago in the parking garage ready to drive off with Darlene. He tries a BS cover story, but ultimately punches her unconscious.
- Elliot tries meeting Darlene at the arcade, but she is missing. He gets panicked and angry, tilting over an arcade machine.
- To meet Mr Robot, he buys a ticket to the Ferris Wheel. The two discuss their absence of communication and distrust. But Robot would not have done the cyber bombing; had he known, he'd have sought another way.
- Santiago is driving Darlene and Dom, secured in zip-ties, along a wooded rural road in New Jersey.* She is outraged at his long-running betrayal, but he berates her naivete and lack of understanding.
- * We know The Dark Army's safe house is located in New Jersey, because that was indicated on the police vehicle arresting Tyrell Wellick in S03E03.
- Robot & Elliot attempt to rummage through Irving's house, hoping to discover the location they'd take Darlene. Irving pops in and saves them the effort to take them straight there.
- Irving's black car arrives at the safe house, where Santiago's red sedan is already parked. They all meet in the barn. Leon stands guard over the Aldersons, while Irving takes the FBI agents outside, by the wood shed.
- As Irving takes off his shirt, Santiago tries to negotiate for Dom's life. In a surprise turnaround, Irving swings the axe into Santiago's chest.* He then explains to Dom that she will take over as the FBI mole. She swears that she will arrest him ASAP, but he refers to the notes written on his palm. He threatens the lives of every vulnerable family member, while continuing to axe into the corpse of her former boss. He shouts, "Dom, I am going to need verbal confirmation that you understand the details of our agreement!!" She concedes. He orders her back to the barn.
- * This rare moment was an ambitious-but-sloppy bit of CGI effects. A magnetic plate was hidden inside Santiago's shirt where the axe would strike. On the ground, the pooling blood and moving axe were shown... but both moved around unrealistically with the axe. The illusion was shallow since the plate is noticeable and the blood shifts position.
- Robot & Elliot see that Whiterose is watching from a webcam overhead. They wait for someone important to arrive. On cue, Grant arrives in a black limousine, and parks beside the other cars.
- Irving briefs Grant about the hostages and the death of their FBI mole. He is ready to leave, but Grant tells him "you are not going anywhere." Irving walks back to Grant, clutches his face, and asks him about Whiterose's "spontaneous overtures." Irving used to be in Grant's position. He places his thumb, still red with Santiago's blood, into Grant's mouth.
- Elliot reveals that he accesses the Dark Army's network. He knows the corruption and the failed plans. He has a way to ship the project to the Congo.
- Price explains his need for rescuing Angela. Whiterose would have eventually killed her. He explains the time he met her mother, Linda Moss. But he was cruel to her, so she swore she'd never allow her daughter to be raised by a monster. He is, indeed, Angela's biological father.
- As Grant is ready to execute Elliot, Leon has been stealthily texting Whiterose. He shoots the surrounding thugs, leaving Grant standing. Grant gets the call from Whiterose. They says their goodbyes,* and Grant shoots himself in the head.
- * Grant's final words to Elliot, spoken in Chinese, translate, "Take care of her."
- Leon hand Elliot the Slackware Notepad* upon which he can set the shipping scheme in motion. Elliot deploys the .gz file. Leon bids his good wishes, and carries the notepad away.
- * This is apparently the same Slackware Notepad used by Tyrell when he was working there at the safe house in episode S03E03.
- Angela asks for retribution against Whiterose. But Price says her only move is to accept she's been conned.
- Dom provides her access credentials to Elliot for the FBI's Sentinel database. She exits the car, and voices her contempt for Darlene, who she blames for her life's ruin.
- He reaches the 5/9 file, and downloads the keylog.txt file encrypted by Romero. Since Elliot knows Romero best, he downloads lyrics from his favorite artists, including Curtis Mayfield, Grandmaster Flash, Isley Brothers, and Shamalar.* Elliot runs a dictionary attack using the lyrics lines, and succeeds at finding the passphrase.
- * The resulting passphrase shown on the screen is "And if there's a hell below We're all gonna go." It's a song of the same title by Curtis Mayfield.
- Elliot reads the keylog.txt file using
less
. Romero didn't capture the E Corp encryption keys; he merely spied on the keystrokes from the arcade. It was Robot who captured the random encryption key seeds and sent them to a home IP address. - On the subway home, Elliot and Darlene recall the day of the snowman "Kevin McAllister" Elliot said "That's the day that dad pushed me out the window." But Darlene remembers differently; Elliot wasn't pushed, he jumped.
- As Darlene exists the train, Robot appears. They get off at the next stop, and discuss whether or not to undo the hack. Elliot points out that one good things came of this: They've shown themselves. Robot concedes that he wants to go forward as a team.
- The music from M83's song "Intro" plays as we watch the Superman movie, in which the Earth's rotation is reversed. Robot spells out that the key encryption seeds and algorithm were captured on a remote virtual box running on their computer at home. He steganographically encoded them into an image,* and burned it onto a CD.
- * The picture, of course, it the one where Elliot and dad are dressed as Marty McFly and Doc Brown from Back to the Future, opening a bag of treats from Halloween. (IMG_5528.jpg)
- Elliot emails the encryption key, the solution to undoing the hack, from his address at falkensmaze@protomail.ch to recovery@e-corp-usa.com. The music continues playing as the scene ends with the strike of the ENTER key.
- But WE'RE NOT FINISHED! The real ending of the episode is a post-credit scene. (Always a part of any Mr Robot season finale.)
- A smoking old sedan blares music as it crawls the NYC streets, and rolls through a red light. Darlene and her prostitute friend (listed in credits as 'Lady of the Night') are nearly hit as they cross. (Darlene wants to fight about it, but 'Night' pulls her back away.) They continue talking about the desperate times and holding on to hope. Darlene sees the recovery as an awaited peace, but 'Night' sees it as a calm before the storm. Her dad lost a bike and both houses, and she has student debts to pay. She suggests reading more Marx before offering simple views on economics. "That ain't how this crony capitalism works."
- The smoking car pulls to park across from Elliot's apartment. 'Night' makes a fearful retreat. Darlene is approached by the four from the car... and leading them is Fernando Vera.
- The music playing is from "Criminal" by Fiona Apple.
