  • The show starts with a look at 1991's Back to the Future animated series. Edward Alderson and Linda Moss are dying of the same lymphoma that has dozens of their coworkers. Young Angela* is passing time watching cartoons. Edward approaches her about the nice people and red velvet cake she's missing at the party. Like Marty pushed his past dad to the dance in Back to the Future movie, Edward gave Angela a push, and hoped she could push Elliot when needed.
    • *Young Angela is played by the same actress that interviewed Angela in the season 2 Whiterose meeting.
  • Young Angela speaks with her mom. To her, the party isn't fun; dying is final and there is nothing to celebrate. Her mom differs that "This isn't the end." And "We'll play and dance, and bake and sing. Doesn't that sound beautiful? Will you believe with me?" In that formative moment where Angela may just be abut to answer, with a young smile on her lips... she is dropped back into the present, in a ransacked E Corp HQ, klaxons blaring and Elliot confronting her.
  • Angela denies knowledge to Elliot. He saw her on the 23rd floor at the Code signing machine. He's shocked that she's okay with blowing up a building. When more rioters charge onto the floor, Elliot takes her safely into her office and closes the door. She insists this is the chance to let Whiterose change the world; that people will be fine, including their lost parents. He says that's crazy, and demands the materials she took. She shoves him off, collects herself, and replies "I'm sorry Mr. Alderson, but are you even allowed to be in this building?"
  • While Darlene is in the safe house with Agents Dom & Norm, they get the call from Elliot. He texted the address to catch Tyrell at the Red Wheelbarrow BBQ.
    • Elliot is contacting Darlene for voice calling through the Signal app. Yet Dom and Norm are listening in... presumably through an FBI app of their own.
  • The agents take this to Santiago at the FBI, but he insists they'll surveil the location.
  • Once they leave, Santiago pulls a burner phone out of his desk. He texts Whiterose with news that Tyrell's location has been burned.
    • The texting between Santiago and The Dark Army are also being conducted through the Signal app.
  • Minister Zhang and Philip Price are attending a post-vote celebration at the Mar-a-Lago Club. They dig criticisms of the tasteless venue and its manager. They agree it is a day in which they both won, which should be celebrated, but their disdain for one another is obvious.
  • Elliot arrives by foot at the Recovery Building. He 'splains the notion of kill process: He needs to terminate Stage 2 before it kills anyone else. The fire crews are completing their vain search for the bomb, returning everyone to work. Elliot's warning failed to show them what to search. He slides in by stealing ID from security.
  • He finds an empty conference room to plug in his laptop. He begins placing an original (protected) firmware on the USPes, but just as he types upsfwupdate and nearly presses ENTER, Mr Robot stops him. Static crackles. He flings back to see the Mr Robot jacket on himself.
  • When he's awake again, he's riding a taxi away. He lost 15 minutes, 20 seconds after Mr Robot directed the cabbie to Houston & A. Elliot charges out of the taxi, back to the Recovery Building.
  • Agent Dom is back at FBI. She's steaming over the location of Tyrell, feeling her hands tied. Then she begins subtle hinting to Norm that maybe they should get lunch.
  • Dark Army operatives are packing up the hideout. Tyrell is bewildered. Irving break news the the trip to the Ukraine is not going to work out.
  • Elliot returns to the conference room, only to find the laptop and backpack contents are missing. He cannot make heads or tails of how to wrestle control between himself and Robot.
  • Dom enters the Red Wheelbarrow, counting employees, chefs, and customers. When smoke starts emitting from the back room door (not on the floor plan), she contacts HQ of a possible Wellick sighting, and kicks down the door.
  • Elliot tries replacing the USP firmware from a computer lab, but Robot places a firewall to block his access. When he tries relaying a note to say "we can still stop this," Mr Robot smashes the PC tower to the floor. (That spooks the employee sharing the room, sending him fleeing in panic.)
  • Tyrell set his instructions aflame, and dowsed them in high proof vodka. By the time Dom arrives downstairs, the room is filled with smoke, and Tyrell has fled. A red apron hangs atop a hidden door, leading to escape tunnels beneath the city.
  • Elliot is racing to the battery room, hoping he can prevent the explosion with its halocarbon suppression system. The race degenerates into two minds fighting over one body, pressing forward or wrecking himself. Bruised and bleeding at the nose, he fights on.
  • The FBI Evidence Response Team combs over the hidden lair. Dom argues with Santiago about her disregard for command, yet following procedure. He orders her back to the office to await evidence to be sorted.
  • Darlene pound the door to Angela's apartment. Darlene expresses the betrayal, but Angela insists this was their common goal.
  • Elliot arrives at the Battery Room, only for his access card to deny him entry. Robot leaves him a memo to give up before he kills them both.
  • As Dom is returning to the office with coffee in hand, Tyrell starts running through the nearby park, shouting about stopping the attack.
  • Elliot replies to Robot that the building is empty of the paper records; there's nothing worth blowing up. He's being played.
  • National Alerts start sounding of cell phones everywhere, starting with Darlene and Angela.
  • Robot is able to rewire the door, and Elliot enters. He pulls the fire system release, and halon gas covers the UPSes. Elliot is shown exiting, Robot taking his appearance as they walk past the window. He exits with the sweeping crowd being evacuated from the building.
  • At Mar-a-Lago, Zhang and Price are alerted by their phones. So are the employees behind the bar.
  • Elliot is just starting to piece together that this could not have been Whiterose's plan. There were no paper records in the building. It could not have achieved anything. Only now does he start noticing that everyone is staring into the screens, shaking their heads in dismay. He finds a store window across the street to see the news. "[The building] wasn't the single point of failure. I was." The headines of live coverage read "EXPLOSIONS AT 71 E CORP BUILDINGS."
